The graduations on these high quality metric taper gauges are engraved or "etched" to ensure permanent markings. The black filled markings are on a hard chrome matte finish which reduces glare and gives you a sharp, accurate and easy to read taper gage. The graduations on other inexpensive metric gauges are often screen printed or on a polished finish which makes them hard to read, less accurate and will wear off the gage over time. Although these gages are referred to as a taper gage, they do not measure tapers.
